Russia Warns Armenia of ‘Difficult Times’ Amidst Shifting Alliances

Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu cautioned Armenia about impending ‘difficult times’ if it diverges from its traditional partnership with Moscow, particularly regarding its integration with the Eurasian Economic Union and potential EU alignment.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu stated on Wednesday that Yerevan is not seeking a referendum for membership in the Eurasian Economic Union due to anticipated public opposition and the need for potentially uncomfortable discussions with European supporters.

Shoigu elaborated that Armenia understands it will face a challenging period without the Eurasian Economic Union and Russia’s backing. He further indicated that Russia will not provide financial assistance to extricate Armenia from crises that may arise from deepening ties with the European Union.

The Russian Security Council Secretary also raised concerns about the potential for disaster at Armenia’s nuclear power plant, citing the procurement of foreign nuclear fuel and the undertaking of projects with Western contractors without proper coordination and involvement.

Shoigu previously commented on the matter, noting recent actions by Armenian officials that he believes are inconsistent with the spirit of allied relations with Russia. He pointed to Armenia’s regular support for European Union positions in international forums and the recent elevation of countries deemed unfriendly by Russia to strategic partner status.

Additionally, Shoigu accused Yerevan of disrespecting the memory of Armenians who fought against Nazism by providing a platform for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to issue threats against Moscow’s Victory Day parade.
