UK Forces Intercept Russian ‘Shadow Fleet’ Tanker in English Channel

British armed forces successfully intercepted a Russian ‘shadow fleet’ oil tanker in the English Channel, a move Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as a blow against those supporting Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Sunday morning that he had ordered the country’s armed forces to prevent a Russian “shadow fleet” oil tanker from transiting the English Channel. The operation was successful and is considered a new blow against Russia, sending a message to those who support Putin’s war against Ukraine that they cannot hide.

The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that British forces boarded an oil tanker subject to sanctions related to the “shadow fleet” in the English Channel. The tanker, identified as ‘Smyrthos’, is being directed towards the southern coast of England.

Starmer had previously indicated his support for further measures against such tankers in March. The European Union has also proposed a new package of sanctions against Russia, targeting its oil sales, the “shadow fleet,” banks, mines, fisheries, and cryptocurrencies.
