Australia Welcomes Iran-U.S. Agreement on Ceasefire, Strait of Hormuz Reopening

Australia has officially welcomed a ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States, emphasizing the crucial role of reopening the Strait of Hormuz for global energy prices and regional economic stability.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have issued a joint statement expressing their support for the recently concluded ceasefire between Iran and the United States. The statement underscored Australia’s consistent call for de-escalation and the termination of conflicts, including ongoing tensions in Lebanon.

The joint statement highlighted satisfaction with the agreement, particularly its provisions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. “We are pleased that the agreement between Washington and Tehran includes measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement read. “Restoring the Strait of Hormuz is essential for alleviating pressure on energy prices and the economy, including within our region.”

Australia urged all relevant parties to leverage this opportunity to pursue sustainable peace through dialogue. However, the nation also asserted that Iran must address long-standing concerns regarding its nuclear program, without directly referencing Iran’s recent actions and extensive verification processes conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Australian government expressed gratitude to Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and other mediating nations for their efforts. Australia pledged to continue collaborating with international partners to bolster peace and stability in the Middle East.

Earlier, the Secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced that following a series of difficult and intensive negotiations spanning several months, a memorandum of understanding regarding the end-of-war talks, known as the Islamabad negotiations, was finalized between Iran and the U.S. on June 14, 2026. This agreement was made under the guidance of Iran’s leadership and with the support of the public and the efforts of its combatants.

Under the terms of the agreement, hostilities and military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon, are to cease immediately and permanently. Furthermore, the maritime blockade against Iran will be lifted with immediate effect. The official signing of this memorandum of understanding is scheduled for Friday, June 19, 2026.
