Pakistan Rejects U.S. Sanctions on Iran, Emphasizes Diplomacy
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Pakistan has declared that it does not consider the U.S. sanctions against Iran binding. Tahir Andarabi, spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, stated during a weekly press conference on Thursday that Pakistan has always rejected unilateral actions and does not accept unilateral sanctions, asserting that such measures have negative consequences and are not recognized under international law.
Andarabi described the economic pressure on Iran as part of a broader conflict between Tehran and Washington, stressing the importance of resolving issues through diplomacy and dialogue. He reiterated Pakistan’s firm resolve and commitment to continuing trade with Iran in accordance with existing agreements between the two nations.
These remarks from the Pakistani diplomat followed the United States’ announcement of a new wave of sanctions against Iran on Monday. The U.S. threatened secondary sanctions against countries or entities that maintain trade relations with Tehran, a move seen as an unsuccessful attempt to achieve objectives unattainable through military aggression.
Responding to a question regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and regional efforts to address issues related to this strategic waterway, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed confidence that current endeavors would soon yield constructive results. However, he noted that the ultimate resolution rests with Iran and the United States as the principal parties in the negotiations.
The spokesperson also refuted media speculation concerning the nature of the visit by Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Head of Pakistan’s Defense Forces, to Tehran on Monday. He clarified that the visit was conducted within the framework of bilateral relations and regional diplomacy aimed at peace.
Andarabi dismissed claims suggesting that the Pakistani Army Chief visited Iran as an envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, labeling such speculation as inaccurate. He highlighted that Munir held very constructive discussions with senior Iranian officials in Tehran, emphasizing that the visit underscored Islamabad’s strong commitment to assisting in finding a way out of the regional crisis. He added that Pakistan continues to engage with its brotherly countries and partners, stressing that all national efforts are focused on resolving the impasse between Iran and the United States and advancing diplomacy for peace.
