World Food Programme Halts Aid for 200,000 Palestinians Amid Funding Crisis
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a drastic reduction in family aid in the West Bank, cutting it by half due to a lack of financial resources. This cutback has resulted in the suspension of food support for around 200,000 Palestinians, a stark contrast to the doubling of humanitarian needs over the last two years.
Sean Hughes, the WFP’s director for Palestine, highlighted that escalating attacks by Zionist settlers, military operations by the Zionist regime, alongside an economic crisis and rising unemployment, have intensified food insecurity. He further stated that one-third of the West Bank’s population faces challenges in meeting their basic needs.
The WFP also reported that its cash assistance to approximately 75,000 families in the Gaza Strip was reduced in July. The organization issued a warning that if humanitarian aid does not continue, as much as 90 percent of Gaza’s population could face high levels of acute food insecurity by the end of the year.
Concurrently, the World Health Organization has cautioned about the potential for a widespread health crisis in the Gaza Strip during the winter season. It noted that water contamination and deteriorating sanitation services are increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.
The WHO further indicated that over 6,600 individuals in Gaza require long-term care following amputations. However, by July, only 12 percent of those who suffered amputations since October 2023 had received prosthetic limbs. The organization has called for the expedited delivery of medical and laboratory equipment, prosthetic limbs, and other essential supplies to Gaza, emphasizing the necessity of ensuring access to safe water and improving waste management.
