Canada Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods Amid Trade Dispute

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Canada has officially implemented retaliatory customs tariffs on imports from the United States. These tariffs, set at 15, 25, and 50 percent, are being applied to goods entering Canada from the U.S.

The Canadian government announced last night that the retaliatory tariffs designated for imports from the United States would take effect starting Tuesday. The measures include tariffs up to 50 percent on American products valued at approximately C$27.6 billion (US$20 billion). This broad range of affected goods encompasses steel and aluminum products, home appliances, agricultural equipment, wood pulp and paper products, and electronic devices.

This action comes in the wake of failed trade talks between Washington and Ottawa. Last month, the United States imposed its own tariffs, reaching up to 50 percent, on Canadian products worth US$20 billion. These included items such as hockey sticks, furniture, honey, and alcoholic beverages. That U.S. action prompted Canada to declare its decision to implement its own retaliatory tariffs.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump had urged all Canadian companies engaged with the United States to immediately relocate their operations to American soil. He emphasized that such companies would be exempt from paying customs tariffs upon their return.
