UN Commission Warns Israeli Military Actions in Syria May Constitute War Crimes
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria has stated that some Israeli military actions on Syrian soil, such as the detention of civilians, may amount to war crimes. This assessment is based on data published by the Mehr News Agency, citing Reuters.
Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, a member of the commission, conveyed the body’s profound concern regarding the continuation of Israeli violations. She detailed that Israel’s activities in southern Syria have involved ground troop incursions, patrols, and raids on various areas, with the Israeli military presence reportedly becoming established in parts of Quneitra and Daraa.
The commission further announced that since December 2024, Israel has entered the UN-monitored buffer zone and has established military infrastructure. Critics contend that these actions contravene Syrian sovereignty and the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement.
The commission also voiced apprehension over the detention of 49 Syrians, including children. It highlighted that some of these individuals have been held in conditions lacking external contact, and the possibility of torture has been raised.
Ní Aoláin characterized Israel’s actions as part of a military occupation and called for an immediate cessation of these activities, urging strict adherence to international laws.
