Cuban President Diaz-Canel Vows Defense of National Sovereignty Against Colonialism

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel emphasized the island nation’s steadfast opposition to any efforts aimed at returning to a colonial or neo-colonial status. In a message shared on the social media platform X on Tuesday evening, Díaz-Canel highlighted Cuba’s historical understanding of colonialism, asserting that the country is well aware of its implications and will not permit its national sovereignty to be jeopardized.

Recalling the sacrifices made for the country’s liberation, the Cuban President stated, “The blood spilled to achieve independence, sovereignty, and autonomy will never be in vain, and we will defend these achievements until the last moment.”

These pronouncements coincide with a significant escalation in tensions between Havana and Washington following Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Trump had previously shared a provocative image depicting various countries, including Cuba, Mexico, and Canada, along with parts of the Caribbean, superimposed with the colors of the United States flag.

It is noteworthy that Trump, on January 29, signed an executive order declaring a state of “national emergency.” This action was framed by the White House as a response to what it termed an “unusual and extraordinary threat” posed by Cuba. The executive order accused the Cuban government of aligning with “hostile nations,” harboring “transnational terrorist groups,” and permitting the deployment of advanced military and intelligence capabilities from Russia and China on the island.
