South Korea Denies Decision on Strait of Hormuz Deployment Amid Iran Talks
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, South Korea‘s Foreign Ministry announced that senior South Korean and Iranian diplomats held phone conversations on Friday concerning the situation in West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz, amid speculation about Seoul potentially deploying military equipment to the vital waterway. The discussions between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, took place as Seoul reportedly considers deploying forces to the strait under pressure from the United States, a move Iran strongly opposes.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry indicated that during the talks, Minister Cho expressed deep concern over recent developments in West Asia and voiced hopes for lasting peace and stability in the region. He also reiterated South Korea’s consistent stance that the free and safe passage of all vessels must be guaranteed.
A ministry official stated that Cho conveyed Seoul’s position that no decision has yet been made regarding a potential deployment and emphasized the importance of swiftly restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
