Democrats Gear Up for Investigations Targeting Trump Ahead of Midterms
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, with less than two months remaining until the U.S. midterm congressional elections, Democratic members of the House of Representatives are preparing to activate a range of political and judicial cases. Their objective is to pave the way for the defeat of Donald Trump and the Republicans in the midterms, and should they regain a majority, to exercise their oversight and investigative powers against U.S. President Donald Trump. They have compiled an extensive list of cases related to Donald Trump’s wealth, his administration’s policies, the alleged misuse of government institutions, and his business and diplomatic ties.
The American newspaper The Washington Post, in an article by Devlin Barrett, Greg Miller, and Ellen Nakashima, reported that Democrats have begun outlining their oversight agenda, which targets Trump, his administration, and his family members. Robert Garcia, nominee for Oversight Committee chair, stated that the extent of Trump’s “corruption and illicit profits” necessitates investigations involving all House committees. However, some Democrats caution against setting expectations too high.
Illicit Wealth of Trump and Family Members
Investigations into the sources of increased wealth for Trump and his family during his time in office are at the forefront. The Oversight Committee is scrutinizing profits derived from cryptocurrencies and the family’s foreign transactions. Furthermore, Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin intends to investigate the investments of companies linked to Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, particularly in cases where investing companies have received government contracts or advances. Other targets include tax settlements with the IRS, the “Truth Social” platform, and the activities of Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law.
Review of Government Transactions
These investigations will also focus on energy and mining deals, the use of funds from government settlements, and presidential pardons for individuals convicted of fraud or those connected to Trump’s political circle. Additionally, Democrats plan to examine White House projects, including the new state dining room, control over the Kennedy Center, and repairs to the Tidal Basin in Washington.
In immigration matters, investigations are set to cover alleged misconduct by law enforcement officers, unlawful detention of citizens and residents, fatalities in detention centers, the deployment of the National Guard in liberal cities, and contracts and expenditures by the Department of Homeland Security. Committees also aim to review the reorganization of government institutions, employee dismissals under the “Government Efficiency” plan, the dissolution of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of Education, and the blocking of congressionally unapproved budgets.
Resumption of Investigations in Judicial Cases
Democrats also intend to examine “politically motivated judicial cases,” including those involving former employees and Democratic representatives in Congress. They seek to investigate government pressure on law firms, universities, and corporations to alter policies or positions, as well as the government’s role in media and technology company transactions.
Foreign Policy and the Epstein Case
In foreign policy, the role of Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in negotiations concerning Iran, the Israeli regime, Russia, and Ukraine is prominent. Cases related to the reconstruction of Gaza, tariffs, the war with Iran, and military operations will also be reviewed.
Democrats plan to keep the Jeffrey Epstein case, the billionaire convicted of sex crimes and human trafficking, politically alive by holding new hearings and summoning related individuals to testify. Conversely, the White House is prepared to impede these oversight efforts by expanding the use of “executive privilege” and protecting foreign advisors from interrogation.
However, The Washington Post notes that this path faces legal and political obstacles, as the current administration claims Democrats lack a plan to improve Americans’ lives. Some Democratic representatives emphasize the need to set realistic goals, as parliamentary investigations alone do not guarantee the president’s removal or conviction and may be met with government resistance in providing documents or allowing officials to be questioned in Congress.
