Russia Condemns Austria’s Visa Revocation for Iranian Atomic Energy Chief

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, has stated that Austria’s revocation of the visa for Mohammad Eslami, Iran‘s Vice President and head of the Atomic Energy Organization, constitutes a breach of the country’s commitments under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters agreement. He also declared that efforts by the UK, France, and Germany to activate the UN Security Council’s snapback mechanism for sanctions against Iran lack legal validity.

During the 70th General Conference of the IAEA, Ulyanov sharply criticized the Austrian authorities’ decision to cancel Eslami’s visa, which would have allowed him to attend the conference.

Ulyanov asserted that Western countries have initiated a “visa illegality” campaign to settle scores with nations they find unacceptable.

The permanent representative of Russia in Vienna emphasized that Austria, through this action, has flagrantly violated its commitments under the agreement pertaining to the establishment of the IAEA headquarters. He further noted that the Austrian authorities had no genuine basis for preventing the entry of the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.

In another part of his remarks, Ulyanov described the attempts by the UK, France, and Germany to activate the automatic return mechanism for previous UN Security Council sanctions against Iran as legally “invalid.”.

Referencing UN Security Council Resolution 2231, Ulyanov underscored that the provisions of this resolution concluded on October 18, 2025, rendering the European countries’ efforts to activate the sanctions snapback mechanism without a legal foundation.
