Syrian Protests Escalate Over Fuel Price Hikes for Second Day

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, based on data published by Mehr News Agency, public protests have continued in Syria for the second consecutive day due to rising fuel and living costs. In connection with this, a number of Syrian protesters attacked several police centers in various cities overnight. Participants in these demonstrations hold the Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani administration responsible for the dire economic conditions in Syria and have called for its overthrow. The public protests against rising fuel prices have spread to eight cities and provinces, intensifying concerns about increases in transportation, food, and commodity prices. As reported, Syrian protesters in Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Rural Damascus, Daraa, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Hasakah expressed their anger at the Jawlani administration’s performance through demonstrations, burning vehicle tires, and blocking main and international routes. Several members of the Syrian parliament also signed a joint request for an urgent meeting with Mohammed al-Bishir, the country’s Minister of Energy. Previously, the Syrian Ministry of Energy announced that the increase in fuel prices was due to exceptionally high global supply costs for these products, coinciding with the closure of the Baniyas refinery for repairs.
