Trump Taps Republican Wes Hunt as Nominee for U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, President Donald Trump yesterday announced the nomination of Republican representative Wes Hunt of Texas for the position of U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia has been without an ambassador since the second term of President Trump’s presidency in January 2025.

Hunt’s appointment requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate to become official. A former U.S. Army officer and Apache helicopter pilot, Hunt possesses direct experience in Saudi Arabia, having served twice as a diplomatic liaison officer in the country before his election as a Congressman in 2022. Following his nomination, he stated his full awareness of the “strategic importance of the partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia” and the significant responsibility inherent in the ambassadorial role.

However, during his recent election campaigns, Hunt had leveraged his experiences in Saudi Arabia to criticize the Saudi monarchy, sparking political controversy within the Republican Party in Texas.

In a social media post last January, Hunt commented on the repressive nature of the Saudi Arabian government, writing, “I’ve seen what this system is like in the real world, not how it’s portrayed on the news channels.” He added that “public executions by beheading were carried out there until quite recently,” and that when he was stationed in Saudi Arabia, women “couldn’t even drive.”

Nevertheless, following his nomination by Trump, Hunt declared that if confirmed, he intends to work towards strengthening relations between the two countries and advancing Trump’s vision of “peace through strength.” His nomination comes amid escalating regional tensions and ongoing attacks by Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement on Saudi Arabia and its oil facilities.
