Former Iraqi PM Adel Abdul Mahdi Criticizes Flight Restrictions on Iran as Major Mistake

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, former Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi stated on Saturday that closing Iraqi airports to Iranian flights is a ‘major mistake’ and a retreat from national sovereignty. His remarks were published on his personal social media page, citing data from Al-Maalomah News Agency in Iraq.

Abdul Mahdi emphasized that barring flights for a neighbor, ally, and friend represents a significant error, a surrender of national sovereignty, and a sacrifice of national interests and future. He added that reconsidering the decision is preferable to persisting in a mistake.

This development follows earlier protests against the continued flight restrictions between Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Secretary-General of Iraq’s Al-Nujaba Movement had previously threatened to call for a sit-in at Iraqi airports involving the Iraqi people, Hussaini processions, and pilgrims’ servants if the issue remained unresolved.

Sheikh Akram Al-Kaabi criticized the ongoing flight limitations, demanding their removal and an end to ‘American domination’ over Iraq. He further stated that discussing sovereignty while Iraq has been reduced to a small village controlled by ‘criminal America’ represents a double standard and an unacceptable situation.

These statements were made after Iraq announced the imposition of flight restrictions with Iran.
