UN Chief Urges US and Iran to End Conflict, Return to Diplomacy

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the United States and Iran to cease hostilities and re-engage in diplomatic dialogue, while commending Pakistan’s significant role in fostering conditions for talks.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the United States and Iran to return to the path of diplomacy and end the ongoing conflict. Guterres, in a press conference alongside Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad, praised Pakistan’s “pivotal role” in creating conditions conducive to dialogue between the two nations, despite a history of U.S. violations of multilateral agreements. Guterres is visiting Pakistan from Tuesday to Thursday.

The UN chief stated, “Your efforts (Islamabad) contributed to achieving the June 17 memorandum of understanding in Islamabad (a memorandum between Iran and the U.S. that Trump unilaterally abrogated), the subsequent ceasefire, and a framework for further negotiations. Every Pakistani should be proud of this pivotal role.”

Addressing the broader situation, Guterres emphasized, “And from Islamabad, I want to send a clear and resounding message to all parties: End the conflict. Return to diplomacy. Fully restore freedom and rights of navigation in accordance with international law.”

Guterres’s remarks on seeking an agreement between Iran and the U.S. come at a time when two prior U.S. incursions into Iranian territory, conducted in violation of all international laws, occurred during indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington. These actions, according to the report, have demonstrated to the world that the United States is not genuinely seeking negotiations.
