Hussein expressed gratitude for Italy’s consistent support of Iraq, both from the government and its people, particularly during the fight against terrorism and the defeat of ISIS. He also acknowledged Italy’s ongoing efforts in training Iraqi federal police forces under the Ministry of Interior and Peshmerga forces in the Kurdistan Region.

The two ministers explored avenues for developing security and military cooperation in the upcoming phase, especially in light of the evolving situation following the conclusion of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq. Additionally, unresolved financial and military cases with Italian governments and companies dating back to the former Iraqi regime were addressed.

The meeting also included discussions on the consequences of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and its impact on European security. Developments in regional conflicts and their implications for Iraq and Persian Gulf countries were also a key topic.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister emphasized the necessity of active engagement from the European Union and its member states, including Italy, in supporting peace initiatives. He urged efforts to bridge the views of conflicting parties and encourage their return to negotiation tables to de-escalate tensions and prevent wider conflict.

Fuad Hussein highlighted the economic ramifications of the prolonged conflict between the United States and Iran, stating that Iraq suffered damages estimated at $60 billion. In response, Tajani reaffirmed the strength of Iraq-Italy relations and Italy’s commitment to supporting Iraq across various sectors. Both sides agreed to maintain communication and coordination on matters of mutual interest. Hussein extended an invitation to his Italian counterpart to visit Iraq and expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality.
