Medvedev Deplores Polish Political Crisis as Constitutional Coup

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation and head of the United Russia party, stated that the current situation in Poland can be classified as a constitutional coup.
Medvedev remarked that a constitutional coup is underway in Poland, noting that liberals following Donald Tusk and backed by Brussels are actively suppressing conservatives from the Law and Justice party. He added that this aggressive approach mirrors the methods deployed in neo-Nazi Ukraine, specifically targeting and stripping the Constitutional Tribunal of its powers.
Reports indicate that riot police have been deployed around the Constitutional Tribunal building in Warsaw, prompting Polish President Karol Nawrocki to cancel a scheduled official trip to Africa. These developments follow the suspension of the tribunal’s president amid escalating tensions between the current government and the right-wing political opposition.
Dozens of police officers have been stationed at the entrances of the judiciary building as supporters of the opposition Law and Justice party gather to protest the removal of tribunal head Bogdan Święczkowski. Meanwhile, the Constitutional Tribunal itself has formally characterized the ongoing administrative interventions as a coup d’état.
The current Polish administration has initiated efforts to replace judges appointed during the tenure of the previous right-wing government led by the Law and Justice party. President Nawrocki, an independent figure with conservative leanings, abruptly canceled his official visit to Senegal to return directly to Warsaw.
Between 2015 and 2023, while the Law and Justice party held power, the European Union frequently criticized Poland’s highest judicial bodies for excessive political alignment, particularly after the tribunal issued landmark rulings prioritizing national legislation over European Union law. Consequently, Poland’s premier judicial institutions have transformed into the primary battleground between the pro-European ruling coalition and the nationalist-conservative opposition.
