Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani revealed on Saturday that hackers have uploaded his personal information to the dark web and offered financial incentives for further details regarding him and his relatives. He described the malicious campaign as a direct threat aimed at intimidating his family.
Writing on the social media platform X, the senior Italian diplomat stated that the perpetrators behind the scheme have continued publishing data concerning him over recent days. Emphasizing his resolve, Tajani remarked that his response is straightforward and that he refuses to be cowed by such tactics.
The Italian official pointed to Rome’s policy on the Ukraine conflict and its steadfast backing of Kyiv as the underlying political motive for the incident. From the perspective of criminal actors, he noted, defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity, democracy, and independence is deemed a high-risk activity.
Furthermore, the foreign minister suggested that the cyber pressures may partly stem from the Italian Foreign Ministry’s stringent cybersecurity initiatives implemented in preceding months. He highlighted that a dedicated cybersecurity department was established within the diplomatic apparatus on January 1st to neutralize digital infiltrations typically orchestrated by actors affiliated with hostile state entities.
Concluding his remarks, Tajani underscored his country’s operational readiness and ongoing collaboration with international partners, reaffirming Rome’s commitment to strengthening joint efforts in countering evolving cyber threats.
