The second impeachment hearing of Yoon Suk-yul; The head of the judicial committee demanded immediate dismissal
reported by Mehr News According to Xinhua, the Constitutional Court of South Korea held the second hearing of the impeachment motion against the deposed president of the country, Yoon Seok-yul, in the case of declaring the failed martial law on December 3, 2024.
In this official hearing, the judges of this court confirmed the documents and witnesses and rejected the claim of Yun’s lawyers that the documents and witnesses were illegal.
Jung Chung-rae, chairman of the Legislative and Judiciary Committee of South Korea’s National Assembly, urged the court judges to remove Yoon Suk-yul quickly. This committee argued that Yun lacks the necessary will to uphold the constitution and is not qualified to be president.
On the other hand, Yun’s legal team argued that the declaration of emergency martial law was not illegal and was based on “high-level executive action” and beyond judicial review. They claimed that the impeachment motion against their client was carried out with the aim of “seizing the power of the president” and there are procedural problems in the two impeachment motions approved by the National Assembly.
Yesterday (Wednesday), Yoon’s legal team requested the postponement of the second hearing; A request that was opposed by the court. The next meetings will be held on January 21 and 23 and February 4, 6, 11 and 13.
The first hearing of the impeachment of Yoon Seok-yul was held on Tuesday, which ended after four minutes due to his absence. Under South Korea’s constitution, the court can hold the trial in absentia if Yoon fails to attend the hearing for the second time.
South Korean police yesterday raided Yoon Suk Yul’s heavily guarded residence and arrested him. According to the arrest warrant, authorities can detain Yoon for 48 hours. In the first interrogation session, the impeached president of South Korea remained silent for 10 hours.
Since December 3, when Yoon Seok-yul declared martial law in South Korea, the country has been plunged into a political crisis. On December 14, he was impeached in the South Korean parliament and suspended from service.
