IAEA Director General Calls for Agency Oversight of Any Agreement with Iran
According to a report by teh English section of “webangah News Agency” citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera Qatar, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stated that any agreement with Iran must allow the agency to monitor its implementation.
He claimed: “Any agreement where the IAEA cannot verify compliance [by parties] will lack credibility.”
GrossiS remarks follow a visit by Massimo Aparo, Deputy Director General for Safeguards at the IAEA, to Tehran, where he held discussions on technical and safeguards issues with Iran’s Deputy for International, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs at the Atomic Energy Organization. Both sides agreed to continue negotiations.
On monday, Aparo met with an Iranian delegation headed by Behrouz Kamalvandi, Deputy for International, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs at Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization. The talks focused on mutual concerns—notably technical and safeguards matters—with both sides reviewing all outstanding issues, including unresolved safeguards topics. they reached an agreement on follow-up procedures and also continued dialog and implementation of existing understandings.
The IAEA delegation was scheduled to depart Tehran hours earlier for Vienna.
