Iraqi interior minister: our borders with Syria remain closed
Iraq’s Interior Minister comments on the country’s borders with Syria and Iran, as well as security guarantees for Jolani’s participation in the Arab Summit in Baghdad.
According to a report by the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Arabiya, Abdul Amir al-Shammari, Iraq’s Interior Minister, stated in his latest remarks that there has been no security coordination with Syria’s Interior Ministry so far.al-shammari said: “No Syrian delegation has contacted us regarding securing Al-Shar’a’s participation in the Arab Summit in Baghdad. No security guarantees have been requested from Iraq for the attendance of Ahmed Al-Shar’a, Syria’s interim president, at the upcoming Arab League summit scheduled to be held in Baghdad.”
He added: “The borders with Syria remain closed. The SDF controls part of Syria’s borders, and we engage with various regions based on risk assessments.”
The Iraqi Interior Minister noted that “Kurdish opposition parties opposed to Iran have retreated from border areas, and border guard forces have taken control of opposition positions along the Iranian border.”
He also reported extensive coordination with Saudi Arabia on border issues and intelligence sharing.
The minister further stated: “Areas near the Al-Qaim border crossing are now clear of Syrian forces, while Iraq has increased its troop presence there.”
