IMF Delegation Visits Syria After 18 Years
According to webangah News Agency, Muhammad Yasser bernia, finance minister of the Jolani-led governance, welcomed the IMF’s first technical delegation to Damascus after nearly two decades.
The delegation, headed by Ron van Rooyen, deputy director of the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia department, arrived in Syria on Sunday.
The visit aims to provide consultations on financial reforms, monetary policy modernization, statistical system upgrades and anti-money laundering measures.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported the delegation’s visit will last five days. Jihad Azour, director of the IMF’s Middle East department, is scheduled to visit Damascus after receiving final reports by late June.
Former U.S.President Donald Trump stated during his May visit to Saudi Arabia that he intends to lift sanctions against Syria after over four decades. Reports indicate potential conditions including normalization of relations between Syria and Israel have been proposed in return.
