66 Civilians Killed by ISIS-Affiliated Militants in Eastern Congo
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, the Associated Press quoted local officials stating that armed militants affiliated with the “Allied Democratic Forces,” who have pledged allegiance to ISIS, launched an attack in the irumo area of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing dozens of civilians.
This region, near the ugandan border, has long been one of eastern congo’s volatile zones plagued by armed and rebel groups.
jean Toby okala, spokesperson for the United Nations mission in Ituri province, described the attack as a “bloodbath,” reporting that approximately 30 people were killed between Thursday and Friday in Irumo.
However, local sources and civil society activists said casualty figures had risen to 66 by Saturday.
The Allied Democratic Forces is a Ugandan-rooted militant extremist group operating for years on both sides of the Congo-Uganda border; this area has become a key passageway for them.
