Israeli Official: Decision to Occupy Gaza Equals Execution of Our Prisoners
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Al-Jazeera Qatar via Mehr News Agency, Israeli media quoted Yair Golan, leader of Israel’s Democratic Party, saying that the Israeli security cabinet’s decision constitutes a ”death sentence” for Israeli captives and represents a “disaster for future generations.”
The New York Times reported that a former Israeli official expressed concern about Tel Aviv’s decision to escalate the conflict. The military fears this may endanger the lives of detained Israelis.
The newspaper also cited retired General Gadi Shamni stating that fully controlling Gaza will not lead to the release of Israeli captives.
He added that this plan will neither defeat Hamas nor disarm it.
Shamni emphasized that implementing this decision will increase suffering for families and harm Israel’s international standing.
He warned it would weaken Israel’s economy and deepen distrust between the government and military.
Shamni noted that a renewed attack on Gaza City would not produce important changes in Hamas’ influence or negotiating position.
He added that establishing effective military control and weakening Hamas would take years.
Shamni further stated that Israel lacks sufficient resources for long-term occupation of Gaza.
he cautioned there is still no consensus on whether military pressure can secure the release of imprisoned Israelis.
