UK Foreign Secretary Responds to UN Confirmation of Famine in Gaza
According to the English section of webangah news Agency, citing Al Jazeera via Mehr News Agency, UK Foreign Secretary David lammy responded to the United Nations’ confirmation of famine in Gaza by calling it ”horrific” and emphasizing that it could have been entirely avoided.
He stated that the famine in Gaza represents a moral disgrace caused by Israel’s refusal to allow adequate humanitarian aid into the territory.
The Foreign Secretary added that Israel must take immediate action to prevent conditions in Gaza from worsening.
Lammy emphasized, “We need a ceasefire and a halt to military operations in Gaza-the epicenter of this famine-so we can deliver aid.”
Meanwhile, the World Health organization reported widespread hunger across Gaza, marking its first recorded occurrence of famine in this Middle East region.
In a joint statement with other international humanitarian organizations, WHO noted that over 55,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women in Gaza require supplementary nutrition.
Doctors Without Borders condemned Israeli policies for depriving Gaza residents of access to water resources, characterizing these actions as part of a genocidal campaign.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs also condemned the situation: “The famine in Gaza is an international disgrace. The world must act.”
Tam Fletcher remarked that preventing famine was possible but their efforts faced obstacles. He said, “The famine is a direct result of Israeli actions. The aid distribution system has been dismantled.”
Fletcher added they are working to persuade the Trump governance to allow them access needed to end hunger in Gaza. He warned that deaths caused by starvation there may constitute war crimes involving deliberate killing.
The UN official concluded with an urgent message for Prime Minister Netanyahu: “Enough-stop this war and let us deliver food supplies into Gaza.”
