Ankara Delivers Sharp Response to Netanyahu’s Statements on Armenian Genocide
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Russia Today,Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments on the events concerning Armenians during the Ottoman era.
The statement said Netanyahu’s remarks on the 1915 events represent a political exploitation of painful ancient incidents.
The Turkish Foreign ministry added that Netanyahu, who is currently facing trial for his role in what it describes as genocide against the Palestinian people, seeks to conceal his and his cabinet’s crimes. The ministry called these statements inconsistent with historical and legal facts, condemning them as unacceptable.
For context, this marks the first time that Benjamin Netanyahu publicly described what he called ”the armenian genocide of 1915″ during an interview on an American podcast hosted by Patrick Bet-david-a move that could spark a new crisis between Tel Aviv and Ankara.
When Patrick Bet-David asked Netanyahu on his “PBD” podcast why Israel had not officially recognized the Armenian genocide, he replied: “I think we have. I believe the knesset passed a resolution to that effect.”
However, The Times of Israel reported on August 27 that no such law has been passed.
When further questioned about why none of israel’s prime ministers had recognized this genocide previously, netanyahu responded: “I just did.”
