Grossi: Cairo Agreement Defines Technical Steps for Cooperation with Iran

The Director General ⁢of the International Atomic Energy Agency stated ‌at the agency’s General Conference that the agreement reached with ⁢Tehran outlines the necessary ​technical steps to resume essential work in Iran.

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency via Al Jazeera, ⁢Rafael Grossi, Director General of⁣ the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said at the opening‍ of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria, that the agreement ‍made with​ Tehran defines the technical measures​ required to restart⁤ critical activities in Iran.

grossi stated: “Our work is based on a basic principle; when the agency can ⁢fulfill its duties, doubts and concerns are dispelled.‌ However, if this ability is limited or disrupted, international peace and security face ​serious risks. We have seen this repeatedly throughout history, particularly in June when Iran’s nuclear ⁢facilities ⁣were attacked.”

He claimed: “in such⁢ circumstances, we sought ⁣to restore trust. everyone knows how vital was the agreement reached in ⁣Cairo. Once again, I thank Egypt for not only providing a⁣ venue but also offering vital support for ‌this initiative. Alongside Dr. Araghchi, we signed an agreement outlining technical actions and practical steps necessary to resume⁤ this critical work in Iran. It​ is now our obligation along with⁢ iran’s to​ implement it, rebuild trust and move forward.”

Grossi ⁢also noted​ that this year’s General Conference takes ⁤place amid critically important ‍global challenges.Military conflicts, terrorism, erosion of nuclear‌ norms, and rising inequalities have tested our resolve.

In a ⁤message on⁤ X (formerly Twitter), he added that the agency ​is “working closely with Iran to implement practical steps toward fully resuming safeguards implementation‌ across the country.”

The IAEA chief further‌ explained that “the agency is verifying past ⁢nuclear activities in Syria,” adding that Syria has agreed⁣ to cooperate fully and transparently with the agency.

he also said inspectors are currently present at all five ‌nuclear sites in Ukraine-including⁤ Zaporizhzhia-where threats of a nuclear incident remain serious.

On​ Tuesday last week in Cairo-the capital of Egypt-Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Grossi signed a document containing new guidelines for Tehran’s technical cooperation with the IAEA.

Grossi commented on this saying: “We reached a technical understanding with Iran regarding inspection notifications and their implementation.”

On Saturday during⁢ a session of Parliament’s National Security Commission,Araghchi stated that negotiations with the IAEA were⁣ conducted ​within framework mandates issued by Supreme National Security Council’s Nuclear​ Committee and confirmed they forwarded “the Cairo​ understanding” to national leaders.

The 69th‍ ordinary session of⁢ IAEA’s General Conference runs from September ⁣15 through September 19, 2025 at Vienna International Center (VIC) in Austria’s capital city Vienna.
