Seyyed Hashem Safi al-Din: From Struggle and Jihad to Martyrdom for the Palestinian Cause
Mehr News Agency, International Desk: Seyyed Hashem Safi al-Din, a senior military commander and politician within Lebanon’s Hezbollah, was born in 1964 in the town of Deir Qanoun Al-nahr in southern Lebanon into a well-known Shia family. He was the cousin of Hezbollah secretary-general Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah and remained closely alongside him throughout much of his life. Safi al-Din pursued religious studies at seminaries in iraq and Iran. From Hezbollah’s foundation, he joined the movement and assumed high-ranking positions.
The Safi al-Din family is politically and religiously prominent, producing several notable Shia clerics and politicians such as Mohammed Safi al-Din, who served as a parliamentarian during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1983, Hashem married the daughter of Mohammad Ali Al-Amin, a member of Lebanon’s Shia Islamic Legislative Council. His brother Abdullah Safi al-din serves as Hezbollah’s representative to Iran.
Political and Military Experience within the Resistance
In the 1980s,following Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah’s lead to study religious sciences at qom Seminary in Iran,Hashem also traveled there for theological education. After Nasrallah returned to Lebanon to establish Hezbollah, he recalled Safi al-Din from Qom in 1994 to assign him critical political and military responsibilities. Alongside Sheikh Nabil Qaouk, Hashem caught the special attention of Imad Mughniyah – Hezbollah’s top military commander.
Upon returning from Qom Seminary, he headed Hezbollah’s Executive Council-functioning like a government body for the organization-and thus took charge over implementing internal policies and expanding its administrative framework.
Safi al-Din led efforts to rebuild Beirut’s southern suburb (dahieh) after Israel’s devastating 33-day war with Lebanon. During that conflict Israel employed scorched earth tactics targeting vital infrastructure through intensive air strikes. In delivering a speech in 2012 about post-war reconstruction efforts across Lebanon he called this recovery ”a new victory against Israel.”
Martyr Hashem Safi al Din was effectively Hezbollah’s number two leader and among its highest-ranking officials active politically/executively but also militarily engaged. He played an active role shaping overall party strategy while often acting as spokesperson representing resistance positions amid various challenges facing Lebanon & regionally.

Following israeli crimes committed after October7th2023 assaults – when much international focus awaited leadership responses -he became the first prominent figure within Hezbollah issuing statements condemning aggression & atrocities.
