UN: Israeli Settlements Have No Legal Legitimacy

The‍ UN Special Coordinator’s Deputy states that Israeli settlements have no legal legitimacy and systematically reduce ⁣Palestinian lands, deepening Israel’s illegal occupation.

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, quoting Mehr News ‌Agency and ‍the Palestine Data Center, ‌Ramiz Alakbarov, the ⁢UN ‌Deputy Special Coordinator for ⁢the⁤ Middle East ‌peace ⁤process, strongly condemned Israeli attacks on Gaza during a Security Council meeting on ‌Monday evening addressing the situation in the Middle East, including Palestine. He said ⁣the current conditions in the region are morally, politically, and legally unacceptable.

expressing concern over Israel’s intensified military ⁤operations across Gaza Strip, Alakbarov said this‍ has caused him deep⁢ alarm and distress. He emphasized that‍ Israeli attacks continue to bring unprecedented ‍levels of⁣ death and destruction to Palestinians. The killing of civilians in Gaza-especially women and children-is condemned. The situation is unacceptable from moral, political, and legal perspectives.

The UN ⁤deputy coordinator highlighted the⁣ dire humanitarian conditions and ⁤suffering faced by Gaza’s population. ‍He described famine in Gaza as a man-made humanitarian disaster. ‌Alakbarov called on Israel to immediately allow unhindered ⁢access for humanitarian aid throughout Gaza. He reminded that the United‍ Nations ⁤and its partners⁤ have an ‌effective relief distribution plan ready‌ to implement.

Alakbarov stated there is no justification for ‌collective⁤ punishment of Palestinians-it must end now. He⁤ strongly opposed any form of ⁣forced displacement ‌or ethnic ⁤cleansing in both ⁢Gaza and occupied Palestinian territories. Turning to land confiscations and settlement policies ⁢by Israeli occupiers, he said: “Israeli settlements have no legal legitimacy; they constitute clear violations of international law and UN resolutions.” These ‍settlements systematically shrink Palestinian lands ⁢while deepening⁣ Israel’s illegal occupation.

He added that Israeli policies involving house demolitions,‍ evictions, ‍and restrictions paralyzing Palestinians’ daily lives fuel growing despair and anger while flagrantly violating human rights laws. Alakbarov urged strict compliance by Israel with its obligations under international treaties. According to UN‍ reports since March ⁤2nd last year (2023), Israel ⁢has closed all crossings into ⁢Gaza blocking foodstuffs, medicine, or humanitarian aid despite trucks filled with supplies ⁤queued ‍at border points-driving Gaza‌ toward famine conditions‌ with disastrous consequences.
