Death Toll Rises in Indonesian School Building Collapse
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and France 24, Indonesian officials have confirmed that the number of casualties from the collapse of an Islamic school building has reached 14.
Authorities in Indonesia report that rescue teams have turned to heavy machinery to save dozens more victims still trapped under the rubble.
A part of this multi-story boarding school suddenly collapsed last Monday while students were gathered for prayer.
Suharianto, head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority, told reporters that rescue workers recovered nine bodies yesterday, bringing the total confirmed deaths to 14.
He added that “rescue forces are still searching for 49 people missing in this incident.”
According to him, the death toll may rise. Residents said the collapse shook nearby neighborhoods due to its severity.
Families of those missing agreed last Thursday-after the official 72-hour golden window following the accident ended-to allow heavy machinery for debris removal efforts.
