UK Joins US Sanctions Against Iran, Citing Diplomatic Resolution and Economic Pressure

The United Kingdom has aligned itself with the United States’ sanctions policy against Iran, with the UK Treasury stating its support for efforts to increase pressure on Tehran through extensive economic measures, while China reiterates its opposition to unilateral sanctions.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United Kingdom has announced its adherence to American sanctions against Iran, diverging from the stance of many independent nations that have condemned the US and Israeli aggressive actions and unilateral sanctions. UK Treasury Minister John Healey, in a statement, declared the UK’s backing for American diplomatic efforts regarding Iran and welcomed measures to escalate economic pressure, including recently announced broad sanctions.

Healey further stated that since the Labour Party came to power, the UK has imposed over 240 sanctions on Iran and will continue collaborating with the United States and other partners to exert economic influence. He reiterated claims that London is determined to prevent Iran from utilizing the global economy and the UK financial system to advance its nuclear program and what he termed “destabilizing activities.”

Healey also urged Iran to cease its “destabilizing activities” across the region, including in the Strait of Hormuz, without acknowledging the aggression by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory. He added that the UK will continue to work with its partners to safeguard its interests, take necessary steps to secure the Strait of Hormuz, and counter what he described as Iran’s “dangerous activities.”

In contrast, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to US threats of further sanctions by stating that its cooperation with Tehran is based on international law. Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that such cooperation should not be interfered with or disrupted. China is closely monitoring developments and will take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests, unequivocally opposing unilateral US sanctions against Iran which lack any basis in international law.
