Lavrov: Russia Will Never Ally with the US Against China
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing mehr News Agency and RT, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded to speculation about a Russia-US alliance aimed at pressuring China to enter nuclear disarmament talks by stating that Moscow will never form an alliance with Washington against Beijing.
In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to his american counterpart Donald Trump extending the New START treaty-the last remaining arms control agreement between the two nations-by one year. The treaty is set to expire on February 5, 2026.
Trump called this proposal a “good idea,” but it was not followed by any concrete action from the White House.Previously, trump had repeatedly called for China’s inclusion in nuclear arms reduction negotiations between Russia and the US.
When asked whether Moscow might join Washington in pressuring China into negotiations, Lavrov said: “Russia will never ally with anyone against anyone else, especially not against China; that is impractical.”
He added that moscow and Beijing have signed a series of bilateral agreements which clearly define thier relationship. These agreements aim at mutual support and cooperation in strengthening their economies, defense capabilities, and international positions.
The senior Russian diplomat emphasized that “for years Americans have sought to involve Beijing in nuclear limitation talks. China has its own stance-we respect it. China says it is indeed not ready; its strategic capacity is not at the appropriate development stage yet. We respect this position.”
According to estimates by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia holds the largest nuclear arsenal with 5,459 warheads, followed by the United States with 5,177 warheads. China’s arsenal currently stands at about 600 warheads but is expanding faster than those of other countries.
