Guterres: Foreign Intervention Has Undermined the Prospects for Peace in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General says foreign interference has undermined prospects for peace in Sudan.

Antonio Guterres, speaking on Monday at the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia, stated that foreign interference has weakened the chances for peace in Sudan, according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Reuters.

He emphasized the ⁣urgent need to halt weapons deliveries to all parties involved in Sudan’s⁢ conflict. Guterres called on the international community to demand an ⁣end ‍to this arms flow.

The armed ⁤clashes began on April 15, 2023, between forces loyal to army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and those led by Rapid Support Forces commander Mohamed Hamdan ⁢Dagalo, known ⁢as Hemedti.Despite ongoing international mediation efforts aiming to bring both‌ sides back to negotiations, no significant progress has been ⁤made.

According‌ to United Nations data, fighting between these two major military factions‍ amid continuing violence and hunger has displaced approximately eight million people.

Nearly half of Sudan’s population-around ⁤25 million⁣ people-now face dire conditions due to sustained conflict and urgently require humanitarian aid. Additionally, 18 million are at risk of famine.

Several ceasefires have been declared through international mediation but⁣ have repeatedly been violated by both combatants.
