27-Year Sentence Begins for Former Brazilian President

according to the English section of webangah news Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and reuters, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving a 27-year prison sentence.
Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered the former president to start his 27-year imprisonment for attempting a coup against his successor.
The court announced it was awaiting confirmation of the ruling from a four-member panel later today, which has already rejected Bolsonaro’s appeal.
Bolsonaro’s lawyer previously stated that he was detained on Saturday by Brazil’s Federal Police.
The defense requested last Friday that Bolsonaro be allowed to serve his 27-year sentence under house arrest due to serious health issues.
Bolsonaro, aged 70, was convicted in September for leading a failed coup attempt against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following his defeat in the 2022 election. His appeal was denied last week.
He led a group planning to assassinate Lula, his deputy, and a Supreme Court justice. Three military officers and one police officer were also sentenced for their roles in the conspiracy.
The trial provoked anger from U.S. President Donald Trump, who responded by imposing a 40 percent tariff on certain Brazilian goods. However, diplomatic efforts eased tensions, and last Thursday the United States removed additional tariffs on Brazil’s meat and coffee exports.
