Honduras Presidential Election Amid Trump’s Threats

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, the Associated Press reported that Hondurans head to the polls today to elect a new president as the electoral landscape is disrupted by an unexpected intervention from US President Donald Trump.
The western media outlet added that what was expected to be a peaceful election campaign in Honduras turned tense following trump’s public endorsement of Nasry Asfura, the National Party candidate, along wiht his declaration to pardon former President Juan Orlando Hernández.
Five candidates are competing in this election. However, polls highlight three frontrunners: Rixi Moncada, former Minister of Finance and Defense under xiomara Castro and nominee of the Libre Social Democratic Party; Salvador Nasralla, Liberal Party candidate known for his anti-corruption stance; and Asfura, former mayor of tegucigalpa representing the National Party.
Each candidate has presented distinct promises. Moncada advocates economic reforms and reducing social inequality. Nasralla focuses on fighting corruption. Asfura aims to restore credibility to the national Party after recent controversies.
This election takes place while security and employment remain voters’ top concerns-issues that persist despite relative declines in crime rates and moderate economic growth. In addition to choosing a president,Hondurans will also elect congressional representatives, mayors, and local council members.
