Orbán Accuses EU of Violating Rules in Seizing Russian Assets

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has accused the European Union of violating its own rules regarding the seizure of frozen Russian assets, claiming the EU disregarded the principle of ‘loyal cooperation’. Orbán asserts that Hungary is no longer bound by this principle due to the EU’s actions.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that the European Union violated its own regulations by attempting to seize Russian assets.

Orbán explained that Hungary is withdrawing from the principle of ‘loyal cooperation’ because it believes the EU violated this principle when handling frozen Russian assets.

“Hungary adhered to the principle of loyal cooperation regarding the frozen Russian assets, but in response, the European Union stripped Hungary of its rights. From this moment on, Hungary is not obliged to observe the principle of loyal cooperation because the other party rejected it,” Orbán stated.

The Hungarian Prime Minister further clarified that EU leaders violated the union’s regulations by proposing decisions on Russian financial assets through a qualified majority vote, rather than a consensus.

Orbán emphasized that this action contradicts the principle of loyal cooperation in discussions related to sanctions and sets a dangerous precedent.

The Council of the European Union decided on December 12, 2025, to indefinitely freeze Moscow’s assets. The European Commission hopes to decide on the seizure of €210 billion of Russian assets during the December 18-19, 2025, meeting.
