Qatar’s Emir and Somali President Discuss Bilateral Relations and Reject Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland

Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held a phone call with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, reaffirming Doha’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Qatar‘s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud discussed bilateral relations and regional developments in a phone call. President Mohamud expressed gratitude for Qatar’s role in opposing Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, while Emir Al Thani reiterated Doha’s full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The leaders also reviewed ways to strengthen Qatar-Somalia ties and addressed the latest developments in Somalia. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry had previously issued a statement rejecting any mutual recognition between Israel and the breakaway region of Somaliland, emphasizing that Doha opposes any parallel entities undermining Somalia’s unity.

Earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced that Israel and Somaliland had signed an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations, including the exchange of ambassadors. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited Somaliland’s separatist leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi to visit occupied territories, framing the agreement as part of the Abraham Accords normalization process.

Israeli media had previously suggested Somaliland as a potential relocation site for Gazan Palestinians. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state.
