Lavrov: West Seeks to Preserve Outdated World Order Amid Shifting Global Power

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the West is attempting to maintain the old world order as global geopolitical dynamics shift. In an exclusive interview, Lavrov discussed the role of BRICS in shaping a multipolar world and Russia’s vision for the future balance of global power.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed global geopolitical shifts and the role of BRICS in shaping a multipolar order in an exclusive interview. Lavrov highlighted the prospects of a “Greater Eurasian Partnership” and the priorities of India’s BRICS presidency in 2026, reflecting Moscow’s perspective on the future balance of global power.

Lavrov noted that judging the results of diplomatic efforts is not up to him, as the Russian President determines foreign policy. He added that developing specific plans for trade, economic, and investment cooperation with partner countries, along with coordination in international forums, are among the key tasks.

The Foreign Minister emphasized the fundamental importance of the global transformation towards a multipolar world, stating that the world is no longer defined by the bipolarity of the Soviet era or the unipolar moment after its collapse. Lavrov asserted that the United States is losing its economic influence while countries such as China, India, and Brazil are rising, and African nations are seeking to preserve their natural resources.

According to Lavrov, the West is unwilling to relinquish its dominant positions, with the current US administration attempting to suppress competitors and maintain the old world order. Lavrov stated that the West is trying to prevent the shift in power, but this process is irreversible because the growth rate of BRICS countries surpasses that of the Group of Seven.

Lavrov also pointed out the increasing use of sanctions and attempts to seize ships in international waters. He stressed that ensuring the continued existence of the country is an ambitious goal, including guaranteeing Russia’s security and that a Nazi state should not be allowed to exist on its borders and the foundations of Nazism must be eradicated.

The Russian Foreign Minister mentioned that creating favorable external conditions for Russia’s internal development and improving the welfare of its citizens are key objectives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Referring to Indonesia’s potential accession to BRICS, Lavrov stated that the emergence of new structures is inevitable as the West loses its hegemony.

Lavrov clarified that Russia is not seeking the dissolution of the International Monetary Fund or the World Bank, but rather striving for their reform. He added that the United States has taken all necessary measures to weaponize the dollar against “undesirable” countries and that sanctions against Russia have continued despite an initial US proposal to resolve the Ukraine issue.

The Foreign Minister stated that the US aims to control all energy supply routes for leading countries, pursuing global economic dominance. Lavrov noted the necessity of seeking secure and complementary pathways for developing financial and economic projects with BRICS countries, including the creation of alternative payment platforms and settlement mechanisms using national currencies.

Referring to the BRICS principles of equality and mutual cooperation, Lavrov said that the “Greater Eurasian Partnership” could help strengthen international cooperation. He emphasized that Eurasia is the world’s largest continent with great civilizations, and this partnership is based on a solid foundation. According to Lavrov, the stronger the ties between regional integration organizations, the stronger the foundation for a comprehensive security model will be.

Lavrov asserted that BRICS provides a comprehensive framework for intercontinental integration and can serve as a platform for harmonizing economic and social development programs. He highlighted that India’s priorities during its BRICS presidency include combating terrorism, ensuring food and energy security, and focusing on the security of information and communication technologies, which Russia actively supports.
