Latest Statistics Reveal Shifts in Iran’s Country Code Domain Registrations

According to the Economic Desk of Webangah News Agency, the domain name, which represents a user’s brand or activity, is freely chosen by the registrant. Valid and acceptable domain extensions must be approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the global body responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to the namespaces and numerical spaces of the Internet.
Common domain extensions include .com, .org, and .ir. Selecting a suitable and straightforward domain name is vital, as it directly influences a website’s ranking in Google search results. Essentially, the domain, or ‘dot com,’ serves as the internet address by which an entity is recognized; simpler and more direct domains generally attract more users.
A domain name consists of two primary components: the domain name itself and the domain extension. The registrant determines the name, securing it if available. The extension often depends on the nature of the user’s operations or, in some cases, the associated country.
In Iran, the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) serves as the main authority for registering internet domains. Any user desiring to register a domain for their website must contact this institute or one of its active nationwide representatives. This institute is responsible for maintaining precise statistics regarding Iranian domains.
The National Center for Cyberspace (NCC) in Iran operates under the IPM and is charged with the oversight of domain registration activities within the country. While the global extent of top-level domains such as .com, .net, .org, and .info, which are open for applications across all nations, can make precise global statistical assessment challenging, the Iranian domain registry provides the latest available registration data for national extensions.
Based on the most recent statistics announced by the National Center for Cyberspace, the country code domains .ir and .co.ir continue to command the highest registration volumes, totaling 1,814,374 and 4,410 registrations, respectively. Furthermore, domains exceeding 1,000 active registrations include .iran with 1,391 instances and .ac.ir with 1,034 domains.
Other domains registered fewer than 1,000 times include .id.ir with 787 instances, .org.ir with 232, .sch.ir with 189, and .gov.ir with 163. The lowest volume of registered domains belongs to .net.ir, with only 26 active domains. In aggregate, a total of 1,822,606 domains have been registered to date.
