CIA Director Casts Doubt on Imminent Iranian Missile Threat Justifying Attack

CIA Director John Ratcliffe did not fully corroborate President Donald Trump’s claims of an imminent Iranian missile threat that served as a justification for military action against Iran, according to reports from the Senate hearing. Ratcliffe discussed Iran’s potential long-range missile capabilities but avoided confirming specific timelines for direct threats to the United States.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, CIA Director John Ratcliffe did not fully confirm the claims made by President Donald Trump regarding an imminent missile threat from Iran, which was cited as a justification for launching an attack on the country. Ratcliffe appeared before Senate lawmakers on Wednesday, raising possibilities about Iran’s future capabilities in developing long-range missiles, and asserted that an “unrestricted Iran could produce missiles with a 3,000-kilometer range capable of reaching Europe.” He also stated that if Iran continued to develop its enhancement technologies, it would gain the capability to threaten the United States, though he refrained from providing a specific timeline.

When asked by Senator Tom Cotton whether Iran could develop a missile to threaten the United States in the shortest possible time, even within six months, Ratcliffe did not provide a direct answer but acknowledged that Senator Cotton had valid concerns. Ratcliffe further claimed that Iran is gaining experience in more powerful booster technologies through its space launcher program, and “if left unhindered, they will have the capability to launch missiles at the American continent.”

These statements come amidst reports from American media outlets indicating that a few days after the commencement of the attack on Iran, Trump administration officials informed Congress in private sessions that U.S. intelligence did not suggest Iran was preparing for a preemptive attack against the United States.

The CIA Director also admitted to having “countless meetings” with President Trump prior to the attack on Iran. Responding to a question from Senator Angus King regarding his presence in meetings where the President was involved in the decision to attack Iran, he stated that he had attended dozens of briefing sessions with the President and was not certain whether a decision had been made at that time.

Despite these apparent contradictions, Ratcliffe insisted on Trump’s justifications for the attack, claiming, “What I can tell you is that Iran had specific plans to target American interests at energy sites across the region, and that is why the Departments of War and State took protective measures for forces and personnel before the attack.”
