European Union Prepares New Sanctions Against Russia Following Drone Incident

The European Union is finalizing a new package of sanctions against Russia, signaling intensified pressure following an alleged Russian drone strike incident near Romania’s border, which Brussels has deemed a crossing of a new red line in the conflict with Ukraine.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that Russia has crossed a new red line in its war against Ukraine, referencing claims of a Russian drone hitting a residential building in Romania. In a post on X, von der Leyen expressed solidarity with Romania and announced that the Commission would continue to increase pressure on Russia through a “new sanctions package.”.

Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, condemned what she described as Moscow’s “irresponsible behavior,” asserting that Russia continues to threaten collective security. She emphasized that the response would be unity and reiterated solidarity with Romania. Baerbock added that Germany would continue to bolster Ukraine’s and Europe’s defenses within NATO.

France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, announced that Russia’s ambassador to Paris was summoned on Friday morning due to the incident. Barrot stated that he informed the ambassador that recent intense attacks against civilians, threats against French and European diplomats in Moscow, and these new irresponsible actions are futile attempts at intimidation and will not deter France from supporting Ukraine.

Britain’s Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, also condemned what she termed a “violation of NATO airspace by Russia.” She strongly denounced this dangerous escalation that endangers human lives and underscored her country’s commitment to defending every inch of NATO territory.
