South Korea Defends Joint Military Drills Amidst Trump’s Opposition

South Korea’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that its joint military exercises with the United States, codenamed Freedom Shield, will proceed as scheduled, despite recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump advocating for their reduction.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Ministry of Defense of South Korea has announced that the joint military drills with the United States, known as Freedom Shield, will be conducted as planned and on schedule. This stance comes in response to remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly instructed his Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to decrease the frequency of these exercises.

The South Korean Ministry of Defense stated that the drills are set to take place from August 17 to August 27. The primary objective of Freedom Shield is to enhance the joint defensive readiness of Seoul and Washington by practicing real-world scenarios, informed by recent combat patterns and security developments.

Earlier, Donald Trump had announced via a message on the Truth Social platform that he had ordered a significant reduction in these exercises. He characterized the drills as costly and stated that they convey an inappropriate and hostile message to North Korea.
