Trump Orders Reduction in US-South Korea Military Drills

President Donald Trump has directed Secretary of Defense Patisserie Hegset to significantly scale back joint military exercises with South Korea, citing costs and potentially sending the wrong message to North Korea.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency,

President Donald Trump announced that he has instructed Defense Secretary Patisserie Hegset to reduce the scope of joint military drills with South Korea. Trump asserted on the social media platform Truth Social that these exercises are not only costly but also convey an inappropriate and hostile message to North Korea. He added that as it was too late to cancel the drills entirely, he ordered a substantial reduction in their scale.

The U.S. President also praised his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stating that the country does not pose a threat to Washington and will be respected as long as he is President of the United States. Trump further claimed that he recently inquired whether Seoul was willing to participate in the U.S. efforts for North Korea’s denuclearization, receiving a negative response from the South Korean President.

These remarks come amidst heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea conducting multiple missile tests concurrently with strengthened defense cooperation between Washington and Seoul. In August 2024, the United States and South Korea conducted the ‘Ulchi Freedom Shield’ exercise, a large-scale drill aimed at enhancing the readiness of both nations to counter North Korea’s missile and nuclear threats. In response to these drills, Pyongyang carried out numerous missile tests, actions that underscore the ongoing tensions and military competition in the region.
