Pentagon Considers Reducing Military Footprint in Persian Gulf After Iranian Strikes Exposed Vulnerabilities

The U.S. Department of Defense, known as the Pentagon, is reportedly evaluating a significant reduction of its military presence in the Persian Gulf following extensive Iranian attacks that highlighted the vulnerabilities of its key regional bases. This strategic re-evaluation could involve relocating forces to alternative locations rather than rebuilding damaged infrastructure.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) is contemplating a reduction in its military presence in the Persian Gulf region in the aftermath of recent conflicts with Iran. Data published by the Mehr News Agency, citing the American media outlet The Washington Post, indicates that Iranian attacks have exposed the vulnerability of major U.S. bases in the region, prompting this strategic review.

Reportedly, the available options include relocating American military personnel westward to locations such as Jordan, the occupied Palestinian territories, or Saudi Arabia, as an alternative to reconstructing damaged facilities. This proposed shift comes after Iranian strikes severely impacted naval support operations in Bahrain, the primary logistics hub for the U.S. Navy in the country. The attacks compelled the U.S. Navy to move its main regional logistics hub from Bahrain to Diego Garcia, transforming a relatively short Persian Gulf support network into a vulnerable 2,200-mile maritime supply chain.

The news outlet further elaborated on the retaliatory nature of Iran’s strikes against the U.S. Navy base in Bahrain. While the passage of time during the conflict allowed for the continued operations of American aircraft carriers and the naval blockade of Iranian ports, reported deficiencies in the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier demonstrated how the destruction of coastal infrastructure, such as the American base in Bahrain by Iran, could gradually degrade a carrier’s combat endurance without direct engagement with a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
