Al-Fayadh Declares New Era for Iraq Post-US Withdrawal, Emphasizes Sovereignty

Faleh Al-Fayadh, head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), has stated that Iraq is entering a new phase following the withdrawal of American forces, emphasizing the need for national sovereignty, independent decision-making, and a redefinition of international relations based on Iraqi interests.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Faleh Al-Fayadh, head of Iraq‘s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), stated in a television interview that Iraq faces a series of responsibilities and challenges requiring calm and rationality, while simultaneously preserving the government’s power, sovereignty, and independent decision-making.

Al-Fayadh clarified that the PMF does not possess independent authority for warfare and adheres to the directives of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, noting that the Prime Minister is responsible for all individuals bearing arms in defense of the country.

He stressed the necessity for weapons to be under state control and called for the regulation of arms within a framework that encompasses all parties. However, Al-Fayadh warned that coercive measures in addressing the arms issue could lead to conflict.

Regarding the period after the withdrawal of American forces, Al-Fayadh indicated that Iraq will enter a new phase necessitating the recalibration of its relationships with global nations based on Iraqi interests. He also underscored the importance of establishing a new power dynamic to safeguard Iraqi airspace and sovereignty.

Al-Fayadh described the departure of American forces and the conclusion of the international coalition’s presence in Iraq as a “proud moment for Iraq” and an occasion worthy of celebration. Concurrently, he urged a move away from inflammatory rhetoric towards a more stable era.

Addressing the targeting of PMF forces, the head of the organization stated that over 100 PMF headquarters were attacked during the war against Iran, resulting in more than 100 martyrs and dozens of wounded. He asserted that the PMF would not falter in protecting its personnel and bases and would take necessary legal measures for their defense.

Al-Fayadh emphasized the need to distinguish the PMF as an institution from political factions and groups. He argued that legislation concerning the PMF should not be rushed or based on political expediency, and any PMF member subject to a judicial ruling must be apprehended and handed over to legal authorities.

On regional developments, Al-Fayadh stated that Iraq’s ethical and political stance dictates solidarity with the oppressed in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran, but not through military confrontation at this juncture. He also expressed concern over foreign military presence in Syria, indicating that Iraq seeks relations with Damascus that preserve its security and stability.
