Canada-US Trade Talks Halt Amid Tariff Dispute

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, negotiations between Canada and the United States have been suspended. This development follows statements from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as reported by Al Jazeera via the Mehr News Agency, indicating the halt in trade discussions with Washington. In response, a U.S. official emphasized that customs duties of 50% on Canadian goods would be implemented at midnight. Reuters, citing the U.S. Trade Representative, further reported that Canada had opposed signing a final trade agreement.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump had announced a three-day postponement of his decision to impose heavy 50% customs tariffs on goods imported from Canada. Trump, referencing the impending tariffs, claimed this temporary pause was due to Washington and Ottawa reaching a framework for a bilateral agreement. The U.S. President clarified that the finalization of this agreement would be contingent upon the completion and formalization of official documents between the two countries.
