UN Urges Iran and US Towards Direct Negotiations Amid Ongoing Conflict
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated on Friday during his press conference that the UN urges the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to enter into serious and effective negotiations, six months after the commencement of hostilities in the region.
Dujarric affirmed that the UN Secretary-General maintains continuous contact with the involved parties and mediators, expressing support for the mediation efforts of friendly nations including Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait in their pursuit of lasting peace.
He voiced profound concern over the devastating humanitarian and economic consequences of the conflict, warning that the destruction of civilian infrastructure and disruptions to global food and energy supplies have plunged the economies of nations least able to withstand economic shocks into crisis.
Despite these diplomatic appeals, the realities on the ground suggest a different narrative. Iran and the United States had previously reached a memorandum of understanding aimed at reducing tensions, which was never implemented due to Washington’s lack of commitment and the White House’s dual approach. Having failed on the military front, Washington has now resorted to what is termed economic terrorism, known as ‘economic expulsion operations’—a policy that reflects the strategic confusion of the Trump administration.
While Donald Trump has repeatedly touted media-fueled fantasies and claims of victory in this unprovoked aggression and the ‘opening’ of the Strait of Hormuz, the reality is that Iran, as the region’s dominant power, exercises complete control over this vital waterway for its strategic self-defense.
Analysts believe that Washington’s contradictory behaviors and attempts to project Iranian weakness have not only proven futile but have also been met with profound mistrust from Tehran. Jean-Arnault, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, continues his consultations, but as long as Washington lacks a ‘fixed strategic objective’ and persists in fabricating imaginary victories, the path to diplomacy will remain obstructed.
