Kocharyan Denounces Charges as Absurd, Criticizes Pashinyan from Detention

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan has described the latest criminal charges against him as ‘absurd’ and attributed them to the ‘manic escalation of inherent fears’ by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Kocharyan, speaking from detention, also accused the Armenian judiciary of serving Pashinyan’s agenda and warned of severe geopolitical consequences for the nation.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan has declared the latest criminal accusations against him as ludicrous and stated that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is once again succumbing to a ‘manic escalation of his inherent fears,’ with the judicial system unfortunately aligned with these anxieties. Kocharyan expressed concern that the country might be lost and that the populace seems to have lost its collective survival instinct.

He added that the new criminal charges filed against him are so preposterous that evaluating them within conventional vocabulary is challenging, though he would attempt to do so. The former president vehemently rejected the allegations, asserting that such baseless charges imply either complete moral decay, legal ignorance, or a total capitulation to the judicial system of Azerbaijan. He characterized the Armenian authorities’ approach as one that dictates all presidents of Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh] should be imprisoned.

Kocharyan further elaborated that the current leadership has steered the country into a highly perilous adventure, positioning it at the nexus of major global geopolitical interests. He identified the authorities’ objective as the deliberate creation of a rift within Armenian society and the fostering of an atmosphere of fear and hatred, which he believes are essential preconditions for meeting all of Baku’s demands.

The former president asserted that Pashinyan is not only ceding Armenian territories but also dismantling the collective will and spiritual values of the Armenian nation, which form the bedrock of any statehood. Kocharyan warned that this situation must cease, or all in Armenia will eventually be compelled to learn Turkish.

Robert Kocharyan was detained last week on charges of financial corruption during his presidency. Experts interpret the actions of the Western-leaning government of Pashinyan and the detention of opposition figures as indicative of Yerevan’s move towards the West and a strategic distancing from Moscow.
