Germany Seeks to Mitigate War Fallout with Fuel Price Reduction Plan
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, citing Germany’s DPA news agency and Mehr News Agency, the German government is developing strategies to reduce the prices of gasoline and diesel fuel. These efforts are a direct response to significant price surges experienced in France and Germany, exacerbated by regional tensions and U.S. actions targeting Iran, which have disrupted global energy supply chains.
The proposed initiative involves a reduction in energy taxes, specifically on gasoline and diesel, by approximately 14 cents per liter. The German Ministry of Finance anticipates that this tax cut will result in a decrease in government tax revenues, estimated at $2.85 billion.
In parallel, diesel prices in France have reached a new record high, climbing to €2.41 ($2.76) per liter. These developments occur as the global energy and fuel supply chain continues to face disruptions stemming from the conflict against Iran and heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. International markets are experiencing fuel shortages and dramatic price increases.
The average price for a liter of 98-octane unleaded gasoline has surpassed €2.28 ($2.61). Furthermore, the average price for 95-octane gasoline, the most commonly sold fuel in France, has exceeded €2.17 ($2.48) per liter. This price point has remained above the 2022 record for over ten consecutive days.
Official reports from the French government indicate that 11 percent of gas stations across the country are experiencing shortages of gasoline or diesel, with some regions reporting as high as 16 percent unavailability.
