The leader of Catholics reiterated the Vatican’s enduring opposition to nuclear weapons, labeling the doctrine of deterrence as “erroneous.” He emphasized that peace is achieved not through a balance of power but through dialogue and the implementation of justice. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed his nation’s commitment to peace, effective multilateralism, and adherence to international law and the United Nations Charter. This meeting marks Pope Leo XIV’s first official visit to France in several years.
